Not too much information is available online about the original artist, Jorge Hernandez, but he is considered a renowned Cuban artist.
The original prints were a very strictly limited edition (due to paper and paint / ink scarcity) of 500 pieces per poster. A very rare and original relic of that period in which there was almost no room or money for such art forms.
Although diplomatic relations between the United States and Castro's Cuba broke off in 1961, that didn't mean that the Cuban tourist industry came to a grinding halt. In fact, the National Tourism Industry Institute (or INIT, the acronym under which it is known in Cuba,), uses one of the big cats from the Havana zoo to lure Hispanic travellers to the capital city.
